Brighton Open Houses: part 2

The only show I am taking part in May is the at the Claremont Hotel in Hove. It is in waddling distance for me so not too much of an effort to contribute some of my prints.

The Claremont is a 5 star hotel on Second Avenue and they are a regular venue on the Hove Open House trail. The walls are packed full of a broad variety of prints and photography - all for sale with the money going direct to the artists.

It is well worth a visit and makes a very pleasant place to take a rest and maybe get a coffee as you take in a few Open Houses in the area.

Brighton Open Houses

Shame on me for these infrequent updates. Soon to become even more infrequent I suppose as I embark on motherhood at some point in the next couple of weeks!

So before I completely disappear from the Blogisphere I shall let you know about a few little bits and bobs that are occurring during May that are well worth a visit if you are in Brighton.

First up there is good ol’ Boxbird in St Johns Street in Hove. They are currently hosting ‘A to B’ - it’s an exhibition of limited edition prints all based around the theme of travel.

I am not actually involved in this show but my regular prints are still available in the browsers.

Here are a few of my favourite exhibits from A to B.

First: Ellen Giggenbach ‘Mr Finigans Secret’ under that, ‘Lost’ an original ink and watercolour by Stephen Elford and lastly ‘Night Flyers’ by Sharifa Brooks Read.

All gorgeous examples from a very eclectic and exciting display. Make sure to check it out before the 27th May.

Etsy find - Melbomba

I’m looking for some cute, slightly retro and not too girlie curtains for the nursery. I knew Etsy would be the place to find such a thing and I think Melbomba from Australia has just the thing. I love this simple yet cute bird pattern and may select the orange, though they are all yummy colour options!

All I need to do now is find someone who will turn them into big curtains for me.

New Stockists

I’ve just had a few prints accepted by 2 wonderful gallery/shops. First there’s Elphick’s gallery - a cool little place near Brick Lane and Spitalfields in East London.

elphickshop

Located at 160 Columbia Road, London E2, Elphick’s acts as a studio during the week and a gallery/shop on a Sunday to coincide with the famous flower market.

Gallery owner and artist Sharon Elphick shares my love of nature as an art theme - her own work is lovely - I particularly like these art deco-ish flowers. I’m really digging the art deco style at the moment, I’m working on a few patterns with this influence and will share with you soon.

Elphick’s is also the first and only official UK retailer of Charley Harper’s prints.

hushemshop

Hus & Hem is another great shop in Ledbury, Herefordshire who also kindly took in my prints. Although I haven’t visited in the flesh, friends of mine have and it sounds like heaven for all Scandinavian design lovers so I certainly intend to check it out as soon as I can. I have just signed up to their mailing list to be notified when their online shop is launched. Go check them out!

New Stockists

One of the tasks I’m dealing with at the moment is getting my prints into new galleries. I put out a few feelers a couple of weeks ago - so far just looking at the South East area - and am really chuffed to have received positive responses from them all. So far, you can now you can find my prints available to purchase from Bluemoon in Tunbridge Wells and Riverside Art in Lewes. Both galleries offer a really diverse selection of art and sculpture, in very unpretentious surroundings.

Art Angels

Art Angels have just sent samples of cards featuring a couple of my prints: ‘Satin Bowerbird’ and ‘Magpie’s Treasure’. I first heard of Art Angels when I picked up a set of cards featuring Angie Lewin’s wood and lino cut prints.

They’ve compiled a range called ‘Printmakers’ which focuses on British printmakers and these sell throughout the UK and US in design led shops and galleries. The quality of print is excellent with a subtle embossed finish - I’m really pleased with them and early reports indicate these are already getting a great response from stockists.

Another print ‘Winter Field’ is due to feature on cards later in the year plus a few pattern designs will be making an appearance on giftwrap.

The original silk screen prints of these and others are available at Boxbird, Soma and Castor and Pollux. C & P also stock some of the Jonathan Adler white ceramics you can see in the first pic!

Work in Progress - alphabet screen prints

After pondering just how many hours I spend staring at a computer screen I thought it would be refreshing to draw with a pencil once again. I combined this with a need to use up some small mounts I’d had delivered by mistake and so I am now in the process of creating some single colour screen printed letters. I’m thinking of printing them in a limited range of options - red, black, blue and a retro orange. Something very versatile and affordable to be added to the Etsy shop..eventually.

Here is a small preview but I shall update you with photos of the finished printed item.

Art Auction - Saturday 30th May

tooveys-logo2This Saturday Tooveys Auction house in Washington, West Sussex are holding their annual contemporary art auction. I’m joining in the fun this year and have submitted a couple of my most popular screen prints. It all kicks off at 6pm, I’ll be there but I expect I’ll leave the room and cringe as we wait for the bids to come in (or not) on my pieces!

The event is open to anyone to bid and the estimates are starting at around the £100 mark, so you could bag yourself a bargain.
